I have been looking for a new job for almost a year but have been unsuccessful. I’m afraid I am doing something wrong. What are some of the biggest mistakes people make when applying for a job?
Here are the three common mistakes that people make when looking and applying for a new job.
1. Failing to apply for a job because you lack the ‘required’ experience
The first and possibly the biggest mistake many people make is thinking that their qualifications don’t exactly match the job requirements – and therefore they should not apply.
Truth is, if you are waiting for your experience to be an exact match to a posting - you’ll be waiting a lifetime.Apply for jobs that match your professional background and experience even just a little bit.
2. Lacking a compelling “why you” story
It is your job to sell others on what you bring to the table and can offer. More importantly, you’ve got to explain why you are the best candidate, especially if you are not fully qualified “on paper.“ A great thing to include in your cover letter or share in an interview is to say, “I realize that I am not a traditional candidate - but please give me 5 minutes to prove to you why I’m qualified and should be considered for the position.”
3. Coming across as boring or average
People easily forget those who are boring and average – they remember people who are passionate and compelling. In addition, many people are passed over for jobs simply because they don’t act like they really want the job. Find a creative and memorable way to describe your professional experiences. Remember, there is a fine line between desperate, and eager and passionate – the difference is in the ‘details.’ Provide examples of what you have successfully accomplished to ensure that you come across as a passionate candidate who is capable of and prepared for the challenge.
Find ways to differentiate yourself by having a great “why you” story and lots of examples of your past successes. This week, even if you are not actively looking for a new job, take a chance and apply for a position that you would have previously thought was out of your league.
