Biggest Job Search and Career Transition Mistakes

I am in my early 30s and desperately want to make a career switch. The problem is, I don’t have a degree or experience in this new field. My family and friends are successful in their careers and have been very supportive, but they don’t really understand the career transition process either. So I turned to LOPP for help. The career counselor was EXTREMELY helpful in telling me the key steps I needed to take to change careers. They showed me how to “translate” my experiences and highlight things that I had done in my previous jobs that were related to my new career. The only regret I have is not asking for their help sooner.

As a soon-to-be fashion merchandising/retail marketing grad, I needed a career plan fast. I completed an incredible internship in NYC, then tried to find my “niche” in the fashion industry and found a new job that I liked, but soon realized was not exactly where I wanted to be. Not only did LOPP give me great advice on how to make my resume stand out, they helped me do it. They also showed me how to change the way I talk about my experience. I’m much more confident because now I know how to present myself in a more exceptional way while I look for entry-level corporate positions in the fashion industry.

While completing my marketing certificate program, I soon discovered that even though I didn’t work in the marketing department, I was already doing marketing projects and initiatives. I tried everything I could think of to make a lateral move into the communications division at my company, but nothing worked. I still work at the same job, but I’m also a consultant (@sidrastartups) who creates social media pages and content for start-up businesses. I always knew I was talented, but having someone else recognize my talent and encourage me helped me to start not just one but two growing side hustles.

When my boss who hired me got fired, everything at work started going downhill. The new Managing Director wanted to replace me with someone else but could not. She then spent the next several months making my life at work miserable. Things went from bad to worse and my supervisor started excluding me from key meetings, and even went as far as to replace my office with a small cube at the entrance to our department. Although I have a master’s degree and decade of experience, I didn’t have a clue about how to navigate this career mess. Each LOPP career session gave me how-to advice and suggestions on what to do, but more importantly what not to do throughout the process. LOPP offered a much-needed new perspective. They referred me to resources that helped me negotiate a great severance package and unemployment benefits that have been incredibly helpful while I look for a new job. Without their advice, I would have walked away with nothing.
